Great post Tom. It reminds me of those Pantene adverts. My hair never looks like that!

I think as an audience we've become lightly cynical about promises made by big brands. But if they're popular we still get tempted. In my opinion honesty is still the best policy if you want to make a customer rather than a sale. I guess that's where social media can keep brands in check by offering a mouthpiece for consumers to spread the real word.

@ Oliver

Very true. Part of the problem is Google's insatiable hunger for stuff to index, which leads to this content. Or discontent. Or both.

@Tom I'm surprised you'd even consider appropriating the phrase 'perceived idiom'? It's been mine ever since I got it from the last person :)

Well, there you are. A perfect (sic) example of an occasion when a stonking (sic) image with just a brand name would have been so much better. As ever, writers beware: if you can't find something useful/new/different/original to say, shut the blank up.

Tom, I understand. I've translated for Norfolk folk:

Swaffham is a piglet pink lipgloss that delivers the ultimate pop of colour, along with subtle shimmer and a high-shine glow, like an August sun reflected by the Broads. Part of the limited-edition Acle Collection, this product is named after a thriving artistic and agricultural area of Norfolk.

@ Paul T

I believe the latter - i.e. everyone does it, but maybe they shouldn't.

I agree re overpromise and underdeliver, but it's complicated.. What if you're selling a me-too or fast-follower product that everyone knows is just adequate? If an honest claim just isn't going to sound that good, it's hard to avoid exaggeration.

Chelsea lip gloss copy sells the dream. Most girls will look at the pictures and, if they look at the copy, scan it. Most girls live humdrum lives in drab suburbs, far from the buzz of inner-city life. Most girls dream of a glossier Chelsea life/look. Hyped copy helps sells the dream.

I read through to the end of this post before clicking the original. I couldn't see the problem and was going to quietly disagree (that lippy sounded pretty good to me!). Then I read the original, with attached photo, and laughed. (You may as well mix some eyeshadow into some Vaseline.)

And now I agree. But I guess it's only natural to talk your product up to be the best so people choose it over all others - that's the whole point of copywriting, right? Though I'm not sure how many would be persuaded to buy it a second time on the strength of that copy.

Yep ... sometimes it's a case of the marketing people drinking their own Kool-Aid and then giving errant direction to the writer. ;) Then it's our job to rein them in and give them a little reality check.
